Dry Needling

Fit For Life Physical Therapy
Dry Needling is a helpful treatment technique that Fit For Life Physical Therapy is offering to Marathoner In Training. Dry needling is a treatment technique used by a physical therapist to reduce pain, muscle tension, and improve mobility. It involves inserting a sterile, thin needle through the skin into muscles, tendons, ligaments, and close to nerves. This technique provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal which will aid in pain reduction.
Dry needling is not acupuncture. While both techniques have been proven through research, their purposes differ. Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is used to improve the body’s energy flow or “Qi.” Dry needling is rooted in Western medicine, looks for physiological responses, and addresses neuromuscular diagnoses. The application and placement of the needles also vary between the two practices. During an acupuncture treatment, the needles are placed superficial and left in for longer periods of time. During dry needling, the penetration is much deeper to target the proper treatment area.
At Fit For Life, dry needling is always part of a larger physical therapy treatment plan and serves as an aid to achieve your treatment goals. It is not a service we offer separate from a comprehensive physical therapy plan of care.
Dry needling can be used for many musculoskeletal problems. When combined with exercise and other hands-on therapy techniques, dry needling can address many pains related issues including, but not limited to, acute or chronic injuries, headaches, neck, and back pain, tendinosis, spasms, hip or knee pain, muscles strains, overuse injuries, and much more. It can also be used to help athletes overcome delayed onset muscle soreness, allowing them to return to their sport sooner.
For most people, there is little to no discomfort with the insertion of the needles. Occasionally, you will feel a pinch or a sting sensation that dissipates quickly. At times, you may experience a twitch response which feels like a quick muscle cramp or ache…these are all normal responses that usually disappear within 24 hours.
Dry needling can be a powerful treatment technique that, when used in conjunction with other Fit For Life Physical Therapy treatment techniques, can help relieve your pain and get you back to doing what you love quickly!
