Berries and Beer ? A Runner?s Summer in the NW
You’ve done your workout or finished your race. It’s time to celebrate. Living in the Pacific NW, we have two BIG crops during the summer: Berries and Beer! You know you want some after a good, long sweat fest, but how do they affect your body?
One is acidic and one is alkaline. Yes, these foods affect the pH of our blood, and this is important stuff for performance!
Here are a few facts about pH:
- Our bodies strive to be balanced. The blood pH range for your body to function properly is very small: 7.35 – 7.45.
- Many things attribute to this balance; however, food is critical.
- A low pH (acidosis) creates an internal environment for bacteria and viruses to thrive. This results in illness, aches, and low energy. UGH!
- Studies are showing a new syndrome: chronic metabolic acidosis. This can lead to bone weakening and proteolysis (muscle breakdown). This is NO GOOD for performance!
What can we do about it?
- Consume foods that are alkaline! Aim for at least 75% of your food to be alkaline.
- Know what foods are acidic and which are alkaline. I have a feeling you won’t be too surprised. Here is a great graph to give you a visual.
- Notice how you feel when you’re watching your acidity intake. You may be surprised at the change.
Am I telling you NOT to have a well-deserved cold beer? No way! Just be aware about what your body NEEDS in relation to what you may WANT. You just may enjoy the side effects.
Nutrition information can be overwhelming. Take this tip and apply it to your next meal. It’s just a matter of taking one meal at a time.
