Fascia is a connective tissue that forms the support network of the body. It encases every muscle and is continuous from head to toe. Fascia is composed of collagen fibers, water, and protein that give it a “glue-like” quality. All of the nerves and blood vessels pass through the fascia. Scar tissue (adhesions or trigger points) can occur within the fascia and cause pain and decreased freedom of movement. Runners will commonly experience adhesions in the IT Band and the plantar fascia of the foot. Myofascial release (low load stretching of the fascia) can help to maintain the health and mobility of the fascia.
