Topeka, Kansas’s capital city, offers a variety of running opportunities. From urban paths to technical trails, Topeka has it all. And you can find runners and walkers almost any time of day on the most popular running routes. If you need company, running groups abound (Check out the Sunflower Striders. We also host weekly runs. Check out our group runs for more info!)
Post run refreshment? The city offers many coffee shops, restaurants and pubs to enjoy your favorite beverage or food. Running weather is pleasant for most of the year thanks to mild winters and shoulder seasons. Summer days in August, though, can approach 110 degrees.
Ready to lace up and explore Topeka by foot? Here are our favorite running routes:
Shunga Trail
- Best for: runs of 3 miles or less, speed workouts, long runs
- Surface: asphalt
- Starting Point: SW 28th Ct, Topeka, KS 66614
- Distance: 17.7
This is an out-and-back trail near Topeka, Kansas. Relatively flat with some minor undulations. Much of the trail is covered. Great trail for any distance from short runs to longer runs. Because it is relatively flat, it’s a great option for speed workouts or for new runners who aren’t interested in tackling hills.
Azura Trail - Skyline Park
- Best for: running on trails, scenic.
- Surface: trail
- Starting Point: Skyline Park, 4841 SW Skyline Pkwy, Topeka, KS 66614
- Distance: 3.6 miles
The Azura trail is a moderately technical loop with some roots and rocks. It offers beautiful views, especially if you make it to the top of Burnett's Mound, the highest point in Topeka. On clear days, views reach all the way to Lawrence.
