Maurten: Sport Fuel, Reinvented.
We're proud to announce the arrival of Maurten.
Maurten was born in 2015 with the idea to make sports fuels easier to digest. By combining high concentrations of natural carbohydrates in hydrogels, the end result is something different. And it's working.
By the 1960s, scientists realized that drinking carbohydrate solutions during exercise increased performance. With a mixture of sugar, salts and lemonade, the first sports drink was born. Science also found that our stomachs don't cope well with high concentrations of sugar – often resulting in slower gastric emptying and GI distress.
That's why Maurten harnessed a hydrogel technology to develop carbohydrate-rich and natural sports drinks that our bodies can tolerate.
What is a hydrogel? How does it work?
A hydrogel is used widely in the food industry in a number of different ways. In Maurten's Sports Drink, they've found a way to build hydrogels with nautral ingredients, including carbohydrates. The hydrogels in Maurten come from Alginate and Pectin, which are both sourced naturally. Technically fibers, these combined under the right circumstances form a pH-senstive hydrogel. Upon mixing with water, you'll have a colorless, sweet liquid. Once the liquid reaches your stomach, the acidity causes the liquid to convert to a hydrogel. Once the hydrogel reaches the intestines, the water, salt, and carbohydrates are absorbed by the body.
Maurten only uses five natural ingredients. Can you tell me them?
Both drink mixes - the Drink Mix 160 and Drink Mix 320 - contain the same five basic ingreidents, only different concentrations.
-
Maltodextrin. Carbohydrate source.
-
Fructose. Fruit sugar found in many plants. High relative sweetness.
-
Pectin. Commonly extracted from citrus fruits and is used as a gelling agent.
-
Sodium Alginate. Derived from brown seaweeds.
-
Sodium Choloride. Salt.
How do I make the mix?
Mix either the Drink Mix 160 and Drink Mix 320 in 500ml of water. Consume before, during and/or after activity. Consume mixed product within 1 day.
Since the Maurten drink mix is based on precise circumstances, it is best to mix with water that contains low concentrations of minerals, specifically calcium. High calcium concentrations make the drink mix hard to dissolve.
