Running Towards Purpose After Breast Cancer
This blog is dedicated in loving memory of Molly, Nicole, and Ashley.
Physical activity has always been an integral part of Karen Xaverius’s life. Growing up, she played sports, and as an adult, she joined various fitness communities. Running was a new challenge for her, but it always intrigued her, especially with the Chicago Marathon being such a legendary event. In 2019, Karen ran her first Chicago Marathon for charity, and it became one of the most fulfilling experiences of her life. But little did she know, a much more personal and powerful journey was just ahead.
In 2022, Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer. The news was devastating, as it is for anyone who hears those words. It shook her to the core, and she found herself feeling lost. However, after completing her active treatments, Karen realized she needed something to hold onto—something to look forward to. Her mind immediately returned to running, specifically the Chicago Marathon. She set a goal to run again in 2023, but this time, it wasn’t just about crossing the finish line. It was about finding her strength again, pushing past the fear, and proving that cancer wouldn’t define her unless she allowed it.
Karen was determined to not only run for herself but to run for something much bigger—something that had been supporting her throughout her journey.
The Power of Community: A Lifeline in Running
The most unexpected gift Karen received throughout her running journey was the powerful sense of community that blossomed around her. This sense of community became something she treasured deeply. After her diagnosis, Karen joined Gilda’s Club Chicago, a cancer support organization, in September 2022. One of the organization's key phrases really struck her: “Community is stronger than cancer.”
This phrase inspired her to run the 2023 Chicago Marathon for Gilda’s Club. In truth, there were days when training felt impossible. Karen faced physical setbacks after her treatments, and there were times when she doubted herself. But with every step, she was reminded that she wasn’t running alone. The people at Gilda’s Club—along with her family, friends, and even strangers at training runs—pushed her forward. Their encouragement helped her reach the finish line, and on October 8, 2023, Karen crossed it.
As she ran, Karen thought about all those who had supported her, those she was running for, and the people fighting their own battles. It was an overwhelming experience, knowing that each mile wasn’t just for her, but for everyone who had been affected by cancer.
Full Circle: Giving Back and Moving Forward
Karen’s journey didn’t stop there. In 2024, she served on the Team Gilda committee during the Chicago Marathon, helping to support 78 incredible runners who raised funds for the organization. It was deeply meaningful to connect with the runners and express her gratitude. As a current member of Gilda’s Club, Karen directly benefits from the programs they offer—monthly support groups, wellness activities, and most importantly, a community that understands and supports her.
In January 2024, Karen’s journey came full circle when she joined Gilda’s Club’s Associate Board. This opportunity meant so much to her. After cancer, she’s moving forward with purpose, working alongside others who share the same experience, all in the goal of continuing Gilda’s mission of support, empowerment, and hope. Karen believes that she has choices in life. She can sit back and let the challenges of cancer define her, or she can choose to act in line with her values, using her experiences to inspire and uplift others. She went through chemotherapy in 2022, ran a marathon in 2023, and in 2024, she cheered on others. It’s all part of her healing journey.
Gilda’s Club: A Safe Haven in the Storm
Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer on February 14, 2022, and though she didn’t know it at the time, Gilda’s Club Chicago started its work on February 14, 1998. Some might call it coincidence, but Karen prefers to think of it as synchronicity. The timing felt significant—like the universe was leading her to this incredible community.
For Karen, Gilda’s Club has been a place where cancer isn’t just a disease; it’s an opportunity to turn pain into purpose, struggle into strength, and loss into meaning. Post-treatment has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions—some days are highs, others are lows. But through it all, Karen has found comfort in the connections she’s made at Gilda’s Club. From group dinners and walks to sharing practical advice about post-surgery recovery, to remembering and honoring those who’ve been lost—these moments have been little bursts of joy and peace that Karen will forever cherish.
A New Perspective: Hope Beyond Cancer
While hearing “you have cancer” certainly wasn’t a part of Karen’s life plan, it has given her a deeper understanding of life’s fragility and beauty. Being part of Gilda’s Club Chicago has made Karen realize that this journey is bigger than her. It’s not just about surviving cancer; it’s about helping others feel empowered, hopeful, and less alone.
Cancer can make people feel isolated, but through Gilda’s Club, Karen has found a compassionate, safe space where her voice is heard, her experience is validated, and she can contribute to a cause greater than herself. She’s not alone in this journey, and neither is anyone else walking this path.
Without Gilda’s Club Chicago, Karen’s life today wouldn’t be the same. They have provided her with the strength to keep moving forward, to embrace her purpose, and to run towards a future filled with hope. And that’s something Karen will carry with her for the rest of her life.
