"The best view comes after the hardest climb."
If you're tired of the rolling hills of the Triangle and looking for some gorgeous views, I'd recommend filling up the gas tank and heading 3 hours west to Connelly Springs, NC, home of South Mountains State Park. South Mountains is not far from I-40 and Morganton, which means you've got plenty of options for hotels and restaurants, but you can also book a campsite in the park if that's your speed (they have electric, non-electric and primitive options). If that feels like a long drive, it is worth it. South Mountains has over 40 miles of trails, some gorgeous views, and an 80-foot waterfall that is absolutely worth the stair climbs.
Suggested route for gorgeous views, big climbs, and waterfalls: Park at the Hemlock Nature Trailhead (southwest corner of main parking area) and run past the bathrooms to connect to the HQ Trail. From there, connect to the strenuous possum trail that will make you realize Raleigh is not as hilly as you thought. Feel free to stop frequently to catch your breath and tell your companions you're just pausing to enjoy nature in all it's glory. Continue on to the Horseridge Trail for some fun runnable downhill. From there you will connect to the Lower CCC and then Upper Falls Trail. Take that to Shinny Trail for an exciting change of scenery, then connect again to the HQ trail. From there you can connect to the High Shoals Falls trail - which is where the waterfalls are. Hike up to the top and then turn around to connect to the HQ trail and back to your car. This would be about 10 miles - but remember that in trail running, all distances are approximate!
If you're looking for longer distances, check out the race website for the Tanawha Adventures race, where you can find the 13, 26 and 31 mile routes.
Other notes:
-Prepare for stream crossings!
-Yield to horses. If the weather is nice, you can expect to see horses on the trails as the Park has several equestrian campsites and trails.
-Watch out on the waterfall stairs - this area can get slippery, especially in the colder months.
-Take lots of photos, eat lots of snacks, and be grateful that you live in such a cool state!
On your way back home, feel free to stop by Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton for some local refreshments. You've earned it.
