Chicago Run Spotlight: Socorro Garcia

Running has always been more than just a physical activity for Socorro Garcia. It’s been a path to connection, a way to challenge herself, and most importantly, a means of giving back to the community. Her journey began in 2013 when friends encouraged her to participate in the Chicago Rock 'n' Roll 5K for charity. What started as a fun way to support a good cause quickly became a passion. Along the way, Socorro discovered a love for running—and a collection of medals that serve as proud reminders of her progress and accomplishments.

A Sense of Camaraderie on the Run

One of Socorro’s favorite aspects of running is the camaraderie and support she gets from being part of a group. She first joined CES (now Fleet Feet Training x CES) in 2016, and it didn’t take long before she built lasting friendships with fellow runners. Together, they’ve shared countless hours training, swapping funny stories, and providing motivation through the ups and downs of the sport.

“I love knowing I don’t have to run alone. I always have a friend by my side,” Socorro says. “There’s something so powerful about running with others. We cheer each other on, and it’s that support that helps make the experience so special.”

Training for the Chicago Marathon

As Socorro continues her running journey, she’s gearing up for another exciting chapter. In just a few weeks, she’ll kick off her Spring Training with Fleet Feet Training x CES, followed by the official Summer Marathon Training program. She’s thrilled to continue as a pacer, helping guide both seasoned marathoners and first-time participants in reaching their goals. Being a pacer gives her a unique opportunity to connect with runners of all skill levels and hear their personal stories and motivations.

What excites her the most is the chance to run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon this year for a cause that’s near and dear to her heart: Chicago Run.

Representing Chicago Run: A Cause Close to Her Heart

Representing Chicago Run holds a special place in Socorro’s heart. The organization empowers thousands of young people across Chicago—ranging from Pre-K through high school — with access to inclusive running and physical activity programs. Socorro has seen firsthand the positive impact of Chicago Run when she volunteered at one of their races.

“Getting to represent Chicago Run means a lot to me,” she says. “It’s a privilege to contribute to their mission and support the development and well-being of young people in our city. I’ve seen the joy and confidence these kids gain from participating in running programs, and it’s incredible to be part of that.”

Through Chicago Run, children develop a love for physical activity that not only enhances their physical health but also builds their self-esteem, teamwork, and resilience. Socorro’s connection to this organization allows her to play an active role in creating these opportunities for the youth in her community.

The Impact of Running: Changing Lives

Socorro reflects on how running has shaped her life, offering her a sense of accomplishment, well-being, and lasting friendships. She knows that running has given her so much, and it’s heartening to know that Chicago Run is helping the younger generation experience the same benefits.

“Running has had such a significant impact on my life,” Socorro shares. “It’s not just about the races and the medals; it’s about the feeling of progress and connection. It’s wonderful to know that Chicago Run’s programs provide young people with the same sense of fulfillment that I’ve found through running.”

By supporting Chicago Run, Socorro is not only fostering a healthier, more active community, but she’s also helping children build a foundation for lifelong well-being and success. Through the power of running, young people are learning the value of physical activity and how it can enrich their lives in countless ways.

Looking Ahead

For Socorro, her running journey is far from over. As she prepares to take on the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Fleet Feet Training x CES, her excitement is palpable. But beyond her personal goals, she’s driven by the opportunity to give back to a cause that’s making a real difference in her city.

“I’m excited to share my journey of running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for Chicago Run,” Socorro says. “It’s not just about finishing the race; it’s about supporting the kids who will benefit from the programs that Chicago Run offers. It’s an honor to be part of this community.”

As Socorro’s story shows, running is so much more than a sport — it’s a way to connect, inspire, and make a lasting impact on the world around us. Through Fleet Feet Training x CES and Chicago Run, she is not only pursuing her personal fitness goals but also helping create a future where young people have the tools they need to lead healthy, active lives.

Socorro’s journey proves that running isn’t just about crossing the finish line—it’s about the strides we take together, the support we give one another, and the causes we run for. Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or just starting your running journey, there’s always an opportunity to make a difference, just as Socorro is doing with Chicago Run.
