Racing Through Life with Crystal and Bruce Plummer: A Fleet Feet Training x CES Love Story
Love and running both require endurance, patience, and a willingness to push through challenges. For Crystal and Bruce Plummer, their journey together has been defined by all these qualities and more. Their story, which began as a workplace friendship, has grown into a shared passion for running, marathons, and the community they've built through Fleet Feet Training and CES.
A Chance Encounter Rekindles a Connection
Crystal and Bruce first met at the start of their careers, working for the same company right out of college. While they became close friends, romance wasn’t initially in the cards—at least not for Crystal. Life took them in different directions, and they lost touch when Bruce left the company. But fate had its own plans. Years later, they randomly crossed paths at a mall, miles from home for both of them. A dinner together weeks later changed everything. That’s when Crystal saw Bruce in a new light, and their love story truly began. Bruce, on the other hand, always had feelings for her but believed in building a strong friendship first. His patience clearly paid off!
Stepping Into the World of Running
Bruce was no stranger to the world of endurance sports—he had already completed marathons and triathlons. Crystal, however, was more of a spectator, cheering him on from the sidelines and carrying his gear on race days. Watching Bruce experience the euphoric runner’s high piqued her curiosity. Eventually, she laced up her own running shoes and joined in.
Still, the transition wasn’t easy. Like many new runners, Crystal faced multiple hurdles: she didn’t have the right gear, struggled to find her pace, and had to juggle a demanding career with her training. Even Bruce, with his deep love for competition, found it challenging to balance work, life, and running. But together, they kept each other accountable and made running a shared commitment.
The Power of Support and Encouragement
One of the most beautiful aspects of their running journey is how they lift each other up. Training for a marathon is no small feat, and Crystal and Bruce have become each other’s biggest cheerleaders. A standout memory for Crystal was preparing for the Chicago Marathon. When she had to miss the critical 20-mile training run due to work, Bruce and their running friends made sure she didn’t have to do it alone. They took turns running with her, supplying her with hydration and nutrition, and Bruce even held a ribbon for her to break through at the finish. Moments like these define their bond — both on and off the pavement.
Racing Together, Growing Together
Through running, the Plummers have traveled to different cities, met incredible people, and built lifelong friendships. One of their favorite memories was taking the Amtrak to Detroit for the Free Press Marathon and Marathon Relay. The train ride was filled with laughter and camaraderie, proving that the journey to a race can be just as fun as the event itself.
As individuals, their running goals differ. Crystal runs to stay healthy and manage the risks that come with aging. Bruce, ever the competitor, sees each run as an opportunity to improve. But no matter their motivations, they always support each other. They prioritize preparation — ensuring early bedtimes before long runs, maintaining a healthy diet, and keeping up with hydration and electrolytes. Most importantly, they encourage one another every step of the way.
More Than a Hobby, A Shared Way of Life
Running has given Crystal and Bruce more than fitness — it has enriched their lives with meaningful relationships, unforgettable experiences, and a deepened connection as partners. Their journey together exemplifies how a shared passion can strengthen a bond, turning miles into memories and races into celebrations of love and perseverance.
Whether it’s training for their next marathon or simply enjoying a casual run together, one thing is clear — Crystal and Bruce aren’t just running; they’re running through life hand in hand.
