Starting the Track and Field Season Strong with Josh Kerr and Brandon Miller of the Brooks Beast TC
As the calendar turns and a new year begins, track and field athletes across the globe set their sights on fresh goals, new challenges, and a reset for the upcoming season. For Olympians and Brooks Beasts TC athletes Josh Kerr and Brandon Miller, the start of the season is more than just lacing up their spikes again — it’s a carefully thought-out process of reflection, rest, and renewal.
Rest and Reset: The Importance of Taking a Breather
After months of hard training and intense competition, it might feel counterintuitive to take a break. However, Josh and Brandon emphasize the importance of hitting the pause button after a long season. "Every year needs to come with a reset," Josh says. "As athletes, we have a tough time appreciating the hard work that got us to last year’s results. That’s why it’s crucial to analyze what went right and what went wrong, and then come into the new year with a blank slate."
Brandon adds, "I think after your season is done, you should take a couple of weeks and go on vacation or just not worry about running at all. It’s so important for growth and for putting your mind at ease as you prepare for the next year. Rest is not just about physical recovery; it’s about keeping your mind fresh too."
Building a Foundation: Taking It Day by Day
Once that much-needed rest is over, the grind begins — but it’s a gradual process. The early stages of the season, often during the fall, are a time to focus on the fundamentals without overloading. "This time of year is about setting goals but staying relaxed," Brandon shares. "You’re not at your peak yet. There’s a time and place for everything, and right now, it’s about taking it day by day."
Josh agrees, highlighting the importance of staying grounded. "We start training again in mid-to-late October. The early sessions are all about consistency and building a base. It’s not about being on 10 all the time, but about setting yourself up for the big moments down the line."
The Role of Community and Team Support
Although track and field is often seen as an individual sport, both athletes stress the vital role that teammates play in creating a successful season. "The team is necessary," Brandon explains. "What makes the Brooks Beasts so unique is the closeness of our group. Coming to practice every day with your best friends, being vulnerable with them, and supporting each other—that’s what leads to success."
Josh echoes this sentiment, saying, "When you’re surrounded by people who share your goals and push you to be better, it’s easier to stay consistent. Even on tough days, having that team around you keeps you accountable and focused."
Takeaways for High School and Collegiate Athletes
For younger athletes looking to make the most of their seasons, the advice is clear: balance rest, preparation, and teamwork. Take the time to reflect on the previous season, set realistic goals for improvement, and don’t be afraid to lean on teammates for support.
“Find beauty in the chase to become the best version of yourself,” Brandon says. "Motivation might come and go, but consistency and discipline will take you where you need to go."
As you dive into the new season, remember that success isn’t built overnight. It’s the result of small, intentional steps taken every day. Rest, reflect, and get ready—the track awaits.
