A 5k to End Hunger in the Triangle
The second annual Food Shuttle Garden Gallop 5k will be held March 17th, 2018.
The race, conceived of and organized by Broughton High School senior Meredith Brown, benefits the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, a local hunger-relief organization providing services to seven counties in central NC.
Coming from a family of avid runners who often raced together, Brown recalls wondering where all those race entry fees were going. It occurred to her that organizing her own race could be an effective way to make a difference in a cause she cared about.
Brown began volunteering regularly with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle as a part of Broughton’s chapter of The Food Ark, a student-run nonprofit dedicated to combating food insecurity in the Triangle. The Food Shuttle works to eliminate food deserts and provide sustainable access to healthy food in low-income areas through community gardens, mobile food markets, community health education, and culinary job training.
Last year's inaugural Garden Gallop 5k raised around $5,000 for the Food Shuttle's Camden Street Learning garden, a Southeast Raleigh community garden and hub for urban agriculture educational programs. Brown hopes to double that in 2018. Money raised this year will benefit the Growing School Gardens program, which helps high-need schools in Wake and Durham counties build school gardens and incorporate garden-based learning into the school day.
The Food Shuttle Garden Gallop 5k will take place at 8AM on Saturday, March 17th, The race starts at the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle's headquarters (1001 Blair Drive) and runs through Dorothea Dix campus.
