Raleigh History Run: Shaw, Peace, and St. Augustine Universities

Our history runs are back! Join us for a guided running tour of three historic universities in downtown Raleigh.

The run will start at Shaw University, founded in 1865, which was the first HBCU (historically Black college or university) in the South and among the first nationally.
We'll run about 1.5 miles (passing other notable historic sites on the way) to William Peace University, which was founded in 1857 as Peace Institute, offering secondary education for white women as well as primary education for girls and boys.
Our route will take us another 1.5 miles (through Historic Oakwood) to St. Augustine University, founded in 1867 to educate formerly enslaved people following emancipation. St. Augustine's campus also includes what remains of the former St. Agnes Hospital, which was one of the few hospitals serving African Americans in the region.
From there, we'll run 2 miles to return to Shaw.

Total: 5 miles

Those who prefer to run a shorter distance may turn back at Peace and return to Shaw for a total of 3 miles. We will aim to run a 10 minute/mile approximate pace.

This event is free, but we do encourage participants to make a small donation to the HBCU Foundation, which provides scholarships, internships, and career opportunities to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including Shaw and St. Augustine.
